“if no art makes you feel anything, make your own art and feel something” is too raw of a line to have come from a jenna marbles video of her painting a rainbow/polka dot seahorse saying “it’s seahorse time” on a denim jacket

Why do you people feel profound thought has to come from high places? The gutter looks at the stars too

not only did you prove your point, but you showed an example of it in the same sentence

angry social justice kirk

You people are so fucking insane wtf is this shit like okay good points but of all of the mascots you chose it’s mr ‘fuck every alien with boobies’ and sprinkle leaves on his head yall need a professional helping you live

You do realize that a good number of these are direct quotes from TOS, right?

Or were you just basing the idea of Kirk fucking every alien with “boobies” off pop culture knowledge without ever seeing the source material? Because that’s like never having seen Romeo & Juliet and saying that Romeo never loved anyone before Juliet. Her name was Rosaline.

The thing is though, as you said, these are all good points, so why should it matter how much fictional consensual sex a character has before the non-fictional good points made are to be disregarded?

Oh, and another thing: Those aren’t “sprinkle leaves,” they’re laurels. It’s a historical reference which you would know from the context of the episode, provided you’ve actually seen it.

Mmmhmm, look like it’s time to spread this around again for those unaware

The gulf between male fanon Kirk and actual canon Kirk is probably the widest I’ve ever actually seen in fiction.

Never let it be said that fan works never lead anywhere because years and years ago one person ran a funny Star Trek Twitter fic account everybody liked and as a result that person eventually got to make a literal canonical Star Trek animated series that is now about to cross over into live action, too

boimmeup:

are people actually… wondering how mariner and boimler can go from animated to liveaction?

they’re not separate universes, guys. animation is just as valid a form of media as any other.

I’m old enough to remember the Akiraprise discourse about the NX-01 when that was new and I didn’t think there could be anything more stupid than that but boy did this blow that outta the water.

I mean, we’ve had MULTIPLE cameos on LD from Riker to Sulu to that one chick who.pour coffee on Picard that time and no one seems to question how THAT works 🤓

Welcome from Twitter if you’re just arriving. Can’t believe I’m about to use Tumblr again unironically.

friendly reminder for the new twitter refugees:

  • change your icon/pfp and put something coherent in your blog description or you’re going to get blocked bcs people think you’re a bot
  • this site is built around reblogs, so please actually reblog posts(especially art and fics!!)
  • you can set your likes and follows to private
  • checkmarks here are a meme and mean nothing
  • follower counts are private and we like it that way, so get used to not judging people by that metric
  • drama and discourse is boring, use your blacklist and block button liberally
  • DON’T CENSOR YOURSELF!! we can swear and say kill and make fun of corporations all we want, and if you tiktok-ify your tags people who have things blacklisted for whatever reason will still see them, and people who want to see that content won’t be able to find it!! spell words out normally, you won’t get in trouble!!
  • tumblr live is sketchy as hell and full of fake accounts, if you decide to use it anyway may god have mercy on your soul o7
  • be nice to the reddit refugees, they’re our friends <3

additional note

  • if you mis-tag your posts to get more views(say you post some fanart you made of your fav Genshin character but tag it as Nimona bcs Nimona is trending) you will get REPORTED bcs that shit is against the TOS, and you’ll also probably get blocked in the process, so fr only tag your posts with relevant tags
image

@sedewt Sorry to pull this from the replies but I figured I should clarify for everyone: Basically, people on tiktok have a habit of censoring specific “bad” words in their video captions bcs of a(possibly incorrect) belief that the site’s algorithm will punish videos with those words. People will say “unalive” instead of “kill”, for instance, but also they will use replacements like “seggs” for sex, l3$bi4n instead of lesbian, that sort of thing.

Regardless of the truth of the algorithm’s programming, this behavior has become so ingrained that it is spreading to other websites, and here on tumblr censoring words like that means that people who have certain things blacklisted cannot reliably avoid content they find upsetting. Like as an example, body horror and gore are legit triggers for me, so I have those tags blacklisted. But, if someone decided to post some body horror art, and, to avoid upsetting the algorithm, tagged it as “b0dy h0rr0r” I would still see the post, bcs there’s no possible way for me to have every single variation on “body horror” blacklisted.

In addition to that, people who enjoy body horror and gore WON’T be able to find that art, bcs they likely are following the “body horror” and “gore” tags, and posts with mangled tags won’t show up in their feed or searches, and they don’t have the time to search every variation on the tag to find the content they like.

As a further example, since I know people on Twitter will misspell “commissions” bcs they think the algorithm suppresses posts asking for money, if you do that here someone looking for an artist to commission by searching for “commissions” won’t be able to find your info!! Or, on the tagging side, people with photosensitivities need to be able to blacklist “eyestrain” and “flashing lights”, and so if you tag something “3y3str4in” they will still see it and potentially have their health conditions triggered.

So when tagging stuff, both for people who need stuff blacklisted and people who want to find your content, you should ALWAYS tag posts with the full, actual words. There’s also no real algorithm here and the one that we do have, as far as I know, doesn’t give a shit if you say kill or fuck or whatever. You’re just making everything harder for yourself AND others for literally no benefit at all.

The only instance where you can, and are expected to, censor your tags is if you’re posting salt/hate. Like if I wanted to complain about say, idk Sasuke and Naruto as a ship, I would use a tag like “sasu//naru” instead of “sasunaru” or “n4rut0” instead of “naruto” so that my post doesn’t show up in the main tag, bcs it’s kinda rude to flood tags with negativity like that. I would also censor the words in my post to avoid them showing up in searches in general, or use a readmore to hide the body of the post so people have to click through to read it.

That is the ONLY time it is acceptable to censor words. The rest of the time you should always just spell out words, especially “bad” ones, bcs people can’t avoid upsetting content if they can’t filter it reliably. If you’re worried about the “algorithm” punishing you or people seeing your post who don’t want to, one, stop caring about the algorithm most of us never interact with it anyway, and two, in addition to full tags being the best for blacklists, we also have community labels for several types of mature content, so use those to your heart’s content, bcs people can filter stuff with those warnings too.

TL;DR: Censoring tags like people do on tiktok breaks the website and makes everything suck for everyone, if you want to warn for content just tag the post with the full word and a community warning label bcs that’s the only way people can avoid content they don’t want to see and/or find content they do.

alright. in my tepidly professional opinion* here are the actual major red flags with the titanic submersible

first, stuff that people are clowning on that isn’t actually a red flag at all

using starlink satcoms for their overall [surface] communications

  • i know it’s fun to clown on elon musk but starlinks are like. Fine. they work fine as satcoms. this is not the issue. none of these problems would have been solved if they’d been using KVH or somebody else instead
  • also these have fuck all to do with the tiny sub, since radio waves physically do not penetrate water enough to be useful for communications lol

the stupid game controller to steer

  • it’s actually super common to use COTS (commercial off the shelf) parts like that instead of some bespoke steering system.
  • they’re easily replaceable if they break, they’re designed to be integrated into larger systems, and you don’t have to do a huge amount of design work before you can even steer your thing
  • here’s one example of this. but it’s pretty common

that being said. here is the fucked up design stuff that i notice

image

Where The Fuck Are The Chairs

  • if you don’t have seats inside your vessel, you don’t actually have a way of securing passengers during rough movement. i suspect that this makes it very dangerous or difficult to ascend quickly in an emergency.

they have had known issues with communication

He continued: “The phrase we keep hearing is ‘they’ve lost communication’ and I’ve gotta say I did three separate dives, I did one dive to the Titanic and two more off the coast of New York and every time they lost communication.ALT

[source: the independent]

  • i will grant that underwater communications is not an easy problem to solve unless you’re physically running telephone wires
  • but this is fucking unacceptable lol
Most astonishingly, the craft is controlled by a generic video games controller – specifically a Logitech F710 Wireless PC Gamepad from 2011, according to gaming expert Matthew Ruddle – and, rather than using a GPS for navigation, it communicates with a tracking team aboard a surface ship, in this case the Polar Prince, via text messages.ALT

[source: the independent]

  • ignore the video game controller thing
  • i presume that they mean “messages in the form of text, sent via an acoustic signal”, not “they are literally using cell phones to text each other” because obvs cell phones (and most radio) would not work
  • it’s actually extremely unclear to me what system the sub and the mothership are using to communicate. idk if this is a “technology reporting hard” issue or if these people are being deliberately cagey. anyway they’re probably using some form of underwater acoustic communications, but what specific form it takes idk
  • regardless, the fact that they’ve had problems with this system in the past is a red flag
  • and the fact that their sub has apparently no internal navigation system is also a red flag. “not having GPS” isn’t really, since GPS doesn’t really work underwater (you need radio 😔), but they should have some kind of internal navigation– at the very least “here is my speed and heading and based on that my expected position is here on a map”

in a power failure situation, they would have been SOL

“Everything else is done with touch screens and computers, and so you really become part of the vehicle and everybody gets to know everyone pretty well.”ALT

[source: the independent]

  • “everything is done with computers” = “nothing works in the event of a power failure”
  • it seems like AT THE VERY LEAST in the event of a power failure, you need to be able to drop your ballast and ascend quickly.
  • it is not clear that they had the capability to do that

something weird going on with their pressure hull

The hull of the Titan vessel "showed signs of cyclic fatigue," according to a January 2020 interview with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who is aboard the missing vessel. Rush told GeekWire that due to that stress, the hull rating was downgraded to a depth of 3,000 meters, 800 meters short of the Titanic's depth.ALT

[source: nbc]

while it is “normal” for structures that are exposed to regular massive changes in pressure to have fatigue (imagine bending a piece of metal in and out over and over, eventually it will break– you want to catch and replace that before it happens), it’s weird to me that

  • the vessel’s depth rating was downgraded
  • without any public statement about what repairs were done, it nevertheless went back to the 4000ft depth less than a year later (in 2021)

they obviously have no “black box” system or any way to locate a missing vessel

  • most boats are required to have this! because most boats are required to be registered with and inspected by various authorities!
  • these guys deliberately skirted that rule by launching off a boat rather than from a port and therefore avoiding the need to get registered or inspected. lmao!
Mr. Kohnen said in the interview that Mr. Rush, OceanGate’s chief executive, called him after reading the letter and told him that industry regulations were stifling innovation. In a 2019 blog post titled “Why Isn’t Titan Classed?” the company made similar arguments. OceanGate said in the post that because its Titan craft was so innovative, it could take years to get it certified by leading assessment agencies. “Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation,” the company wrote.ALT

[source: nyt]

Company Culture Is The Killer

complete disregard for safety is really what killed these people

Princeton graduate and Titan submarine entrepreneur insisted Atlantic dives were not dangerous and once said: ‘At some point, safety just is pure waste. If you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed’ALT

[source: the independent]

obviously if this is your CEO your company culture is totally fucked. beyond saving. you do not have a regard for human life.

for reasons unknown they didn’t flag the authorities that the vessel was missing for hours and hours

Sunday 18 June: 9am ADT: Dive operation begins. 11.47am ADT: Last communication between Titan and the surface staff of OceanGate is recorded. 6.10pm ADT: Time Titan was scheduled to resurface. 6.35pm ADT: Authorities are notified and a response operation is initiated.ALT

[source: the independent]

not that it likely would have helped to save these people if they had been alerted earlier, but it shows a desire to cover up mistakes

and like. obviously. you should get your shit inspected. nobody taking paying passengers anywhere should be allowed to be their own safety inspection authority.

the original sinking of the titanic was what led to SOLAS (safety of life at sea) rules being instituted. they’ve been updated several times since then, but they don’t yet cover submersibles like this, since they are relatively new. it’s likely that this incident will cause a new interest in updating the rules. as they say: every regulation is written in blood

*i’m a mechanical engineer who works in the maritime industry, but not like, a particularly related section of the industry– i do shit with cargo containers mainly. no further info on my credentials will be given since i have no desire to doxx myself on tumblr dot edu. i’ve tried not to say anything too wrong or out of my depth in this post but my opinion is “guy with an engineering degree who reads news articles” level of informed. so take your maximum grains of salt

Oh man, thank you so much for doing a writeup from this perspective! I’ve been metaphorically chewing my fingers off over this since the news started coming out but wasn’t sure how well I could comment on most of it, because I don’t have much familiarity with sea systems and less familiarity with PNT than I should, but… I am a reliability engineer, and I have a few bonus little things to add. Behind a cut, I think

worth clicking through for that cut

to put it in perspective: i think the most common impact of a fuckup in the software i work on is a multi-millisecond delay in someone seeing an ad, and we’re more careful about testing and mitigation than these people appear to have been.

kintatsujo:

I can’t actually overstate how popular Yugioh was in the 2000s you guys it was on par or moreso than the TMNT phenomenon in the 90s

Mai was on the cover of TV Guide– Mai, a supporting female character, was on the cover of TV Guide. There were magazines. There was cereal. There were dumb little dogtags that I wore the entire first year I worked at my first real job. There were tie in games and even 20 years later they considered it worth making dsod and releasing it in theaters.

Yugioh is probably the entire reason the Naruto or One Piece mangas got translated, because interest in Yugioh was why Jump tried out a physical monthly release in English in the first place.

Yugioh helped mainstream modern anime.

I need you to understand that. Pokémon absolutely had some influence there but there was a time period that Yugioh was more of a mainstream anime than Pokémon. They did it together.

And the only reason any of you thinks otherwise is because when you’re young you just kind of weigh all the cartoons you watch on the same scale. YOU didn’t realize that it wasn’t normal how Yugioh kept completely taking over the Saturday morning broadcasts. That wasn’t normal! The only other shows that they ever did that with were Pokémon and Digimon! And those were always special occasions!

Toward the end of Yugioh DM they were airing something like ten episodes a week, all Saturday morning, for months at a time.

That, my dears, is absolutely bonkers.

Yugioh fandom isn’t small, it’s just old and exists in pockets and that makes it SEEM quiet.

This is the first time I’m learning that Mainwas on the cover of TV Guide, but also….wow.
